Where's Your Focus?

December has been quite a month of reflection for me. I turned 47, we celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary, and we’re in one of the hardest financial struggles of our marriage. It makes me wonder: have I put my focus where it needs to be this December?

The I’m-trying-to-convince-myself me says I have done pretty well putting Jesus first every day, especially this time of year. However, the let’s-be-honest-and-look-in-the-mirror me says there’s always room for improvement.

I love Christmas and everything about it. The commercial side of the season is fun and harmless—the baking, decorating, lights and shopping. But these things can be very distracting and, let’s be honest, totally overwhelming.

This year it’s as if God grabbed me by the shoulders, looked me square in the eye and said, Rhonda, I have to be first! I allow you to enjoy the tinsel, lights and shopping, but I must remain your first priority

So, this year, the decision was made: no tree, no decorations, no baking and so far very little shopping. Only a manger scene in our home. Something I thought would be devastating has been totally freeing.

I wanted the manger scene to be in a place that would direct my family’s focus to Him. The Holy Spirit led me to a place it would never be overlooked—right in front of the TV! Yep, no one will miss it there because many hours a daysad to say, are spent in worship of that square box!

I think it’s working. The babies and I have talked about the story of how Jesus was born and we’ve used the figurines to act out the story. I’ve found them playing a couple of times with the whole entourage on the floor. They are learning the real reason for the season.

In the spirit of true transparency, I came home the first night to find the manger was pushed off to the side of the TV! I pray the culprit was reminded of the birth of our Savior as he or she moved it. I diligently moved it back that night knowing it would be a good distraction for the next TV viewer.

Jesus’ birthday is quickly approaching. It’s a good time to ask the question, Where’s my focus? You may be surprised at the answer.
